February 2018 – Team Update

The team completed our design review in January. We were very excited to be able to share our design and plan with people across campus. We want to thank the Student Activities President’s Programming Fund for donating over $150 to our team for this event. We also saw a few new team members join our team after hearing about our ideas.

There are several areas of our design that have been updated or modified since our Preliminary Design Briefing due to feedback from SpaceX and our team consulates. The levitation team has decided to try to use air bearings to lift the pod. This replaces the old magnetic levitation design that was deemed to be too complicated for the scale of our team and what we were planning on doing. The propulsion team is also looking for alternate methods to move the pod besides the originally proposed linear induction motor.

Looking forward, the team is excited to present our ideas at the 2018 Engineering Design Showcase at Rice University’s Tudor Fieldhouse. Look out for more information in the next few weeks about our preparations for the showcase.
